Why do you use gas primarily for engines?
Gasoline is one of the only fuels that can easily be transported with the vehicle, and it does not require an overly complex engine to be utilized. Coal, wind, water and nuclear power are more suited for stationary power plants where large quantities of fuel can be brought in to produce large amounts of power. Some vehicles, like navel submarines and battle ships, use nuclear powered engines, but nuclear powered vehicles are too dangerous to be owned by non-military people.
Because gasoline is highly flammable and gives off dangerous vapors when burned, it not an optimal fuel for home heating, cooking, or lighting. It also burns too fast and too much of it would be needed.
