Question

What happens when a company that you have worked for, but no longer do, writes you a check and you cash it, but then they want it back because they say they sent it by mistake?

Answer

As with most things, you do the right thing. If you are entitled to the money, keep it. If you received the money in error, return it.

Answer

As a Franchise Attorney I basically agree with the other attorney answer. However you didn't mention the facts and circumstances surrounding the check you received. This may alter the analysis. Consult with a good business or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
