What is the purpose of a vehicle damper?
the damper controlls the spring rebound speed on your suspension. without it your car would be uncontrolable.

Dampers otherwise known as shock absorbers, absorb oscillation between two moving parts. They are only called dampers when they occur horizontally on steering linkage parts in order to prevent wheel shimmy on certain 4x4s such as certain Jeep models.
If they are installed in a suspension system to absorb road shock loads, they area called shock absorbers. Struts are a type of shock absorber. They can be either the compression type which resist compression like Bilsteins, or the rebound type which resist expansion like Konis. Either way, any type, their purpose is to resist component oscillation.
